The Provenance of Sand in Mortars from Roman Villas in Ne Italy: a Chemical-Mineralogical Approach
نویسنده
چکیده
The chemicalmineralogical composition of the sand fractions of mortars found in Roman villas dating from the 1 st century A.C. located in Northern Italy has been investigated by optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy plus energy dispersive spectroscopy microanalysis and x-ray diffractometry. The petrographic results on the mortar samples have been compared with mineralogical data available on recent fluvial sediments in rivers located near the archaeological sites investigated. The aim of this study was to assess the feasibility of this simple analytical approach as a useful tool in assisting in the determination of the provenance of the raw material used in Roman Age in the making of mortar for building construction purposes. Preliminary results indicate that a good correlation can be established between the mineralogical composition of the sand grains imbedded in the ancient mortars and the fluvial sand clasts present in rivers in areas nearby. This is particularly true when the river sands are characterized by distinct mineralogical markers.

Some 43 samples collected from surficial sediments of Semnan Province (Alborz zone) and NE Isfahan Province (Central Iran zone) were analyzed, for constrains on provenance. Sand fraction were analyzed by XRF analyzer Philips Model PW 2450 in the laboratory of the Geology Survey Iran (GSI). Precision was 0.01%. Furthermore, 8 selected sediment samples and 8 samples from rock units from surroundi...
متن کاملCrushed and River-Origin Sands Used as Aggregates in Repair Mortars
The systematic analysis of mortars from monuments or historic buildings and the simultaneous study of the construction environment show that it was common practice to use naturally occurring sand from local rivers or streams for the production of the mortars. There are cases though, mainly on islands, where sands of natural origin were limited, and marine or crushed sands were used possibly aft...
متن کاملIdentification of Sand Dune Sources in the East Sistan, Iran by Using Mineralogical and morphoscopic Characterization of Sediments
Sedimentation in the dune fields of the Sistan Plain of Iran is the result of deposition of fine-grained sediment downstream of the Helmand River. Due to poor adhesion and low moisture content of soil particles, and the strong renowned Levar wind, dune fields mostly of Barchan and Nebkha types are created. This study aims to assess the physical, morphological and mineralogical characteristics o...

Little information is available on the provenance, evolutionary trend and characteristics of the loess deposits in northeast Iran. These deposits are thought to be related to Quaternary paleoclimate. Studies of mineralogical, surface textures and geochemical composition and trace elements in these loesses in Golestan Province suggest that they are mostly derived from felsic igneous rocks (grani...
